Hand dyeing the yarn is the place where I revel in having more spontaneity and improvisation. Artistically, it is very important to me to have this space of dancing with inspiration and color in a more fluid way. I hand paint my warps using a sponge or paintbrush and it allows me to have a creative expression outside of the normal rigid grid structure of the loom. It is here that the careful planning and calculations meet and merge with the mystery and surprise of the creative muse. A creative conversation takes place between the materials, colors, feeling, and my original design idea that usually evolves the piece from it’s original concept in a way I consider to be Divine Guidance.
Once the yarn is dyed and ready it’s time to begin the dance with the loom. The loom I most often work on is an 8 shaft floor loom, which was a wedding gift from my husband and one of my most cherished possessions. The yarn is wound onto the loom under tension and each thread goes one at a time into an assigned place. Any errors in this process will affect the design and must be corrected. This part of the process can be very time consuming and tedious.

Hi!! I'm Lita and I'm passionate about weaving.
I create wall hangings and wearable art pieces on traditional floor looms, using all natural fibers. I love creating things both contemporary and yet timeless through the ancient art of weaving.
The first moment I was introduced to a loom I knew instantly that I needed to become a weaver. And not just dabble in it but be a weaver for life. There is something infinitely fascinating about the process of taking a bunch of yarn and turning it into cloth. I love the combination of artistry and technicality that comes together in the act of weaving. It tickles my brain in all the right ways, and I sincerely hope my pieces tickle some delight in you also!
The focus of my work is creating cloth with layers of intention and meaning. My intricate designs are the result of literally embedding codes based on words, prayers, and mantras, into the patterns of the fabric. My current body of work has been exploring a traditional design technique from Colonial America that converts the letters of words into a sequence of numbers. This number sequence is then "translated" into a woven pattern, creating a completely unique design that visually holds the phrase of words.
Each piece I make is a creative journey exploring the interplay of structure and improvisation. My designs are meticulously planned out before the weaving begins and yet I always leave some space for unplanned spontaneous creation to happen at the loom. In this modern world of cookie-cutter consumption, I feel a driving force to counteract the meaningless mass production with one of a kind hand made textiles filled with intention and layers of meaning in every step of the process.
Although I'm based in Costa Rica, I can ship internationally. If a piece speaks to you, let's talk about how we can make it yours. For inquiries about purchasing a piece, commissions and collaborations, contact me.
