Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy
Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy is a type of motorized, dynamic traction that can help relieve pain syndromes associated with herniated, bulging and degenerative disc conditions and compression. Spinal decompression works by gently stretching and releasing the spine, creating changes to the disc positioning and pressure. This change takes pressure off the spinal disks, which are gel-like cushions between the vertebrae of your spine, by creating negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated disks may retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This in turn, helps promote movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks so they can heal.
You are fully clothed during spinal decompression therapy. For lumbar disc conditions, you will be fitted with a harness around your pelvic region and another around your trunk. You either lie face down or face up on a computer-controlled table in a neutral, flexed or extension posture. For cervical disc issues, your head will gently lay on a specialized device attached to table. A computer will be programmed to customize decompression therapy to your specific needs.
Treatment may last 10-15 minutes or more and you may require 12 to 28 treatments over six to eight weeks, depending on the severity of your condition. Before or after therapy, you may have other types of treatment, such as:
Spinal adjustments, Soft tissue bodywork
Low level cold laser therapy, Hot or cold packs
Restorative exercises to promote strength, flexibility and balance.
