Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Longo Mai

The environmental project of the Longo Mai European Cooperatives Association has been developed concurrently with its social project (www.sonador.info). Its core idea is the promotion of sustainable ways of life for present and future generations. Therefore, since the early 1980s, the Longo Mai Organization has voluntarily protected its forests while simultaneously allocating other areas of its property for agricultural use and housing for low-income families.

Today, through the creation of the Longo Mai Private National Wildlife Refuge (Longo Mai National Wildlife Refuge), the aim is to further enhance forest protection, which in turn forms part of the sustainable development strategy that the Longo Mai Organization wishes to continue promoting.

OBJECTIVES

General:

To achieve a greater degree of protection for wild flora and fauna, as well as water resources, through the creation of a Protected Wildlife Area in the form of a Private National Wildlife Refuge.

Specific Objectives:

• Protection of wild flora and fauna.
• Contributing to the conservation of one of the most fragmented ecosystems in the region.
• Protecting water resources for the benefit of the rural aqueducts serving the communities in the area (Longo Mai, Convento, Sonador, and others).
• Increasing the promotion of community-based rural tourism and educational tourism in Longo Mai through its natural attractions.
• Securing funding for the continuity and sustainability of the environmental project.
